The last email I sent to the OM list was about Purchasing a refurbished
12-100mm M. Zuiko lens directly from Olympus, and finding it defective.
The barrel that extends when zooming was loose and rattled. Olympus had
said that they would not make an exchange on a refurbished product, but
take the lens back for repair.
I want to follow up and report that Olympus made good on the problem.
I sent the lens back to Olympus on Friday, August 28^th . I got an email
from Olympus on September 2^nd that the repair was completed, and gave
me a UPS tracking number for the return shipment. It arrived the next
day. (Shipping was UPS Ground, but I am only about 225 miles from
Olympus in New Jersey.)
The documentation said that they had replaced the internal barrel. The
barrel is still not rock solid, but much improved from its earlier
condition. I am still a little perturbed that the lens still has some
play in the barrel; I would have expected better from a Pro lens. The
list’s feedback about this problem was one person who no longer has the
lens saying that he recalled it being solid, but another person who has
the lens saying his copy has a little play. So I guess I will live with
the play.
In any case, I haven’t had time to try the lens out much. The day after
I got the lens back I traveled to my son’s house for an extended stay.
He just had his second child, and we went to help him out. I did bring
my camera, but since the picture opportunities were mainly going to be
people indoors, I took my trusty old12-40mm 2.8 lens instead.
Of course the key factor in taking pictures is opportunity. The best
picture of the visit came from a cell phone, not my OM-D.
