Ken,

Did you ever consider taking a side job with the Alaska Chamber of Commerce?

My association with Alaska returnees started early.  A good friend's older brother returned to his home state and got married.  My nephew taught school in Alaska and then returned, settling in California and getting married.  My backdoor neighbor served as a Fire Dept. Engineer in Alaska, then returned to the states for retirement.  Every one of them finally found a reason to come back.

Keep pointing fine glass at pretty scenery.   Maybe it will never get to become boring.

Ah, but there's more!

If you order your new Alaska home today, you get no state income tax,
no state sales tax, minimal vehicle registration fees, no metered
water usage, no vehicle rusting due to salt on the roads.

But wait, there's more!

They actually PAY YOU to live here! Yes, you heard me right, the state
actually pays residents!

And if that's not amazing enough, there are no fees and permits for
hiking, biking, skiing, or snowshoeing in our lands. Offroad vehicles,
snowmobiles and watercraft have minimal permitting fees.

As you can imagine, there has to be something even more wonderful,
right? You betcha! You get to wake up every morning eager to
experience what new visual miracle Alaska will throw at you that day.
There is no rushing around for the two-weeks of intense travel to take
in all the sights at places like Denali and Homer. You get to take
your time, experience the bore tide on Turnagain Arm, the changing
seasons, and variations upon variations of cloud, light, mountain,
water patterns.

And if you live around Anchorage, you have everything any metro area
has (except sports and concerts and affordable health care), but in
minutes you can be in a spot so Alaska that it brings tears to your
eyes. No ferry boats, no hours long commutes (usually).

We've been here three years now and I'm still as giddy as I was the
first day. Of course, we did things the hard way - we moved here sight
unseen. We had never been to Alaska before and my interviews were over
the phone.

I don't know about the PacNW in this regard, but there are days when
I'm out hiking and/or photographing and I get rather emotional as it
is beyond my ability to comprehend the beauty and experience. And I
grew up in Michigan along the absolutely beautiful lakeshore.
Porcupine Mountains is my favorite spot on earth, but as special as
that place is, it's the norm here.

One day, I was driving down to Hope with my second daughter, and she
asked me "if you could choose between mountains and water, which would
you choose?" We were around Girdwood at the time, and I'm looking at
mountains AND water, and I said "why choose?"

Downside to this incredible offer? Postage and Handling is slightly higher.

Seriously, I do like the PacNW. The islands are quite neat. But Alaska
isn't just a place, it's a culture, and it's a people. And it is one
unending photo-op.
