Yes. Should work fine.
I’m slowly upgrading 10+ year-old Macs by putting SSDs in them. Every SATA SSD
I’ve bought used on evilBay formatted just fine.
But I just had my first failure. It failed HARD. Doesn’t even show up with
command-line utilities. Luckily, Time Machine had my back, and I only lost an
hour’s work.
I had two disks in a Mac Mini: the original, now dedicated to backup, and the
SSD boot drive. I had a spare Mac Mini, and I mounted the broken one using
Target Disk Mode, and simply restored the backup onto the spare Mac Mini.
(You DO have a backup drive, no? If you only have one hard drive, but at least
two slots, dedicate it to Time Machine when you put in the SSD. If you only
have one slot, buy an external case for the HD you’re replacing, and then use
it for backup. My impression is that SSDs, while fast, aren’t as reliable as
hard disks.)
