I have two catalogs - the huge one for all of my archival photos, the
current one for this year's photos that I am still working on. That way I
have one sleek, fast, efficient catalog to work on and one slower but
completely searchable to find anything I need when I need it.
I've tried it several ways since LR first came out. It keeps improving to
the point that I almost never have to go to PS unless I need layers or
masks for something. The two-catalog method makes the most sense for my
work.
It is infinitely customizable so I don't think you could make any mistakes
setting it up that you can't change or correct later.
Have fun!
