Ah, well I'm glad I have it turned on, then.
However as you say, ‘collections’ are only in the database. If you need to
switch to a different DAM you could apply the collection name as a keyword
to all the included images and rebuild the collections in the new DAM
(assuming it has something to support such a thing).
That would be pretty simple for regular collections. Smart Collections are more useful to me, as new images that meet
the criteria are automatically included. No way, of course, to store that at the individual image level. Nor do I know
how/whether other DAMs do something similar.
