Powerhouse, no. But it is a huge upgrade for me comfortable here well
behind the cresting wave. I've been nursing that old box along for years
replacing a piece here, upgrading there. Finally things came to a head
when it finally died. I have been accumulating parts and pieces for the
big moment and wasn't caught completely unawares. The problem was
setting aside the time to do it without affecting work or trips to
Scotland :) Now is actually a good time.
Started by stripping out the case and installing the main components.
MSI X470pro MB, Ryzen 5 2600 CPU, 32gb 2666mHz RAM, Samsung 500gb
970EvoNUME M.2 harddrive. Plus the old video card which has some life
left. Reinstalled most of my old harddrives and the eSATA controller for
the backup drives. As you can tell, competent but not cutting edge by
any stretch. Maybe I should have spent a few more bucks to future-proof
getting PCie4 and USB 3.2 but I don't see a need for the foreseeable
future.
So I was ready to power up....nothing !! After testing the power supply
turns out it was the problem not the MB like I thought. So now I have a
new EVGA 750 80+ Platinum 750W modular PS. Can't complain as the old one
was over ten years old. Now it runs like a top. That M.2 drive is sweet.
Faster than the old SSD even.
Right now the biggest time consuming job is reinstalling all the
software, backing up, etc. Here's what it looks like:
