Ektar is one of the most exposure-sensitive films I've ever
encountered. Velvia is more sensitive, but at least the color curves
stay put. Ektar's curves are more like "Tail of the Dragon".
If I were to suggest something, that would be to do a gaussian blur
and resize to 1/8 file size. Then take that file and apply auto-tone
settings to it to see where that lands. I suspect that Adobe will do a
whole lot better on getting the curves right if you have the file
dumbed down. Then apply those curves to the uncompressed file.
This is a trick that I've used on several other films and digital
camera files where sensor noise has corrupted the tones and
white-balance.
