Oly batteries and their bodies communicate. The battery tells the body it's state of charge, and perhaps more. (The
communication protocol has been at least partially decoded by third party makers.)
Two possibilities to consider:
1. The batteries are close to end of life, won't hold much charge, and the E-M1 is fussier about what it considers a
good battery.
2. All BLN-1s are not equal, old ones aren't as smart as newer ones, and
communication with the new body is poor.
No idea if either might be true, just logical theories to explain observed
behavior.
A further data point in possible support for the communications theories. The batteries have five contacts, labeled I,
S, -, T, +. The camera body (at least up through E-M5 II) only contacts the last three. I taped over the "T" contact.
The camera starts up fine. When the shutter release is half pressed, it just shows three underlines where the battery
icon would be. Howsomever, it happily takes pictures.
Perhaps an E-M1 would refuse to work with such a battery.
