This morning I cycled out to the Gilbert Riparian Area, a groundwater
recharge facility that was designed in the form of a park with a number of
pools. It is vegetated with all sorts of desert riparian trees and shrubs and
attracts all sorts of birds, from hummingbirds to hawks and occasionally
pelicans.
I had intended to take photos, but as I looked around I couldn't help but
notice that fully three quarters of the people of all ages were walking around
with their heads bent down, fixated on their cell phones. At least three
people were actually looking down at a pair of phones. I was so shocked that I
did not take a single photo, instead left for a golf course restaurant 2 1/2
miles away.
Until now, I had thought that the term "smart phone zombies" was just a
joke. Not any more.
Run for your lives!
