That sounds feasible. I checked a dictionary which had
Machinery.any tool or device, as a long-handled brush or scraper, used to clear
the interior of a pipe or duct.
I can imagine men in cloth caps with rakes scraping the soot out of the back of
a 737 engine but your explanation seems more likely.
