The Darwin core is real, open-source UNIX, and any changes they make to that is also open-source. Of course, people don’t buy a computer so they can type bash commands, and the Apple GUI is all proprietary. But it does mean that UNIX software ports with no more effort than you’d take to go from BSD to System V. And you can run X-Windows, if you really want to...
