Not to put this off the rails, but I'm curious. In a recent post someone
implied that pronouncing the place where you park your car as the GAR ridge was
at least partly British. I have always wondered where this came from. That's
what maternal grandfather always pronounced it that way.His father was (this
part f the history is clouded) was a German who cme herer from France, and his
grandmother was Swiss. I always assumed it came from one of them. But I don
know what happens when you assume.
And I can assure you that he was the last person in the world to be
pretentious.

I disagree, Philippe, I believe that British English (RP and otherwise) has the
stress on the first syllable of both forms, /ɑʒ/ and /ɪdʒ/ (and both forms are
used by different members of my own family). I suspect that US English has the
stress on the second syllable of /ɑʒ/ - I have never heard /ɪdʒ/ used in US
English.
Though this doesn't help with pronunciation of 'camouflage' in US English!
But bonus points to you for use of IPA!
Piers (stress on the first syllable!)

Thanks Jez
The British RP (received prononciation) is the « arge" form, this I know. And I
suspect the same applies in Br.Eng. to camouflage for the same historical
reasons even though the stress is apparently on the first syllable in
camouflage (3 syllables), and on the second and last one in RP garage (2 syll
only), making it easier to skid from arge to idge while/when shifting the
stress from 2 to 1, hence my question about camouflage in the US.
