I’ve just received this link to the Airprox magazine, published by the UK
Airprox Board.

I’m showing you this because it has a very important article on vision in
flight, discussing your high acuity vision (and how narrow it is) and how you
must use that vision to see other aircraft. I teach this at the Centre of
Aviation Medicine (which is for military aircrew) so it pleases me greatly that
it’s out in the GA world as well. Of particular note is the principle of
saccadic vision: your high acuity vision doesn’t work properly when you sweep
your eyes around a scene and there will be gaps in what you see. This of
course important for lookout when flying, but is of equal significance when
driving and using junctions.
I’ve just sent it to one of my nephews in the hope that he’ll take note for
when he’s flying (GA).
