FlightAware is also good for nervous parents whose (adult) children are
flying internationally. :) #1 son was on a domestic flight in the US and
landed several minutes ago. Seeing the airline report them at the gate
in the track log is a good feeling :)
Apparently anyone can contribute local info to the data stream, needing
just a raspberry pi single board computer, a particular "software
defined radio" dongle with an external antenna and a live internet
connection.
