We all know about GPGP (Great Pacific Garbage Patch), but the issue with
banning straws is entirely different and it doesn't have anything to do with
the fact that plastic isnt biodegradable.
It started with a simple video of a rescue of a turtle with a plastic straw
stuck up its nose. Later it became apparent that straws could hurt marine life
in many other ways.
When it comes to Global Warming, very few people deny its existence anymore.
Unfortunately, they are the loudest and have politicized the issue. No sane
person refuses to acknowledge it and no sane person assumes that it is purely
result of human activities.
Moose alluded in his post earlier that it has to do with rates. Most events
could be described with mathematical formulas that include number of variables
and their rates of change. Which variable rate would trigger catastrophic
events is not well known for now. All we know are three things:
1. Climate is cyclical i.e. there were warm periods at number of occasions in
the past2. This one is different as the temperature rises at much higher rate3.
The human population increases exponentially and it puts stress on the system
with its constant demand for resources
Personally, I do not doubt that human activities are the main contributor to
the current climate change.
