If one reads the stories of the American pioneers heading west, one
will find frequent mentions of Pokeweed. The berries are poisonous, but
the leaves were eaten for their vitamin content.
In my yard it is a nuisance, cropping up in many border areas. But, if
caught in the sunlight, it sort of glows. As the berries ripen, they
turn a purplish black, and are quickly snatched by the birds.
