I think that "multi-second" is one of those "sometimes it works" kinda
thing. I'll shoot multiple shots trying to get a good 1-2 second
handheld exposure. It's funny because out of, say, 10 exposures,
either all but one will be sharp, or only one will be sharp.
My biggest problem with hand-held long exposures is body motion. I
tend to rock forward and back a little bit and that shifts the focus
plane during the exposure. I suppose that Olympus' latest/greatest
IBIS is supposed to fix every imaginable form of motion, but I'm using
primitive stuff.
I'm actually doing pretty good hand-holding the Canon 6D down to
impossibly slow speeds when I use the "silent" setting. It's a lot
like the E-1 in that regard. There is very little shutter shock and
the shutter release itself is less vibration inducing. The DMC-L1 and
E-3 are far harder to get right because the shutter release has a
distinct notch in the plunge. There really are few times when the IBIS
of the E-3 is superior to the non-IBIS of the E-1.
