My memory on these things is a bit fuzzy, but I believe it actually had some
meaning relating to bank charter numbers. Banks like to keep low charter
numbers, as it indicates they've been around and stable for a long time. So,
if you had charter #100 as the Third Bank, and had to reorganize for some
reason, you could only keep charter #100 if you could prove a lineage - so you
became "Second Third Bank" and your charter could stay at #100 rather than the
next available charter that would be something like #5274. Carry this through
successive bank failures and reorganizations and you could easily wind up with
"Fifth Third Bank."

My parents bank at (I kid you not!) The Fifth Third Bank.
I don't know if the name was whimsical, or if it has some meaning. I just shake
my head...
