And they say an English degree is worthless… if you can write well enough, you,
too, can sell a mediocre lens for over $1,700! This guy has a fine future in store,

BTW: The much, much better Olympus OM Zuiko 500/8 Reflex has been spotted for
under $400 on evilBay. I paid over $600 for my copy!

There are two "tricks" to mirror lenses, one age old and one newish.

Newish is contrast adjustment in image editors. The old Modern tests included contrast as an important part of their ratings. This is simply unimportant now. I have taken shots with catadioptric lenses that had low overall contrast and low edge contrast, due to combinations of long distances and inherent lens qualities. Curves, Contrast and LCE adjustment made them normal.

Old is the truth that these lenses are often used on subjects that don't fill the frame at the distance available. Sneakerzoom doesn't work for many such subjects. Other than by helicopter, this view of Half Dome is only available from one spot on the Yosemite access road. <http://galleries.moosemystic.net/Yosemite2ip/pages/020428-29_05mgr.htm> The juxtaposition with El Capitan is only on this spot.

This view is again only available from one spot without a helicopter. <http://galleries.moosemystic.net/MooseFoto/index.php?gallery=California/Yosemite/Yosemite_2011/Yosemite_Valley&image=_MG_0382oof80m.jpg>

In those cases, the lpmm figures aren't the whole story. Apply a little math to the Modern Photo test results, and you will find that the Sigma 600/8 is about equal to the Oly 500/8 when both are cropped to the same subject display size.

I haven't carefully tested that comparison, as I didn't have the Oly at the time I took many Sigma photos. I have compared the Sigma to the supposedly lesser Meade 1000/11. For subjects that aren't too large for the Meade AoV, it is simply superior to the Sigma - for the same subject display size.
