I've been paying close attention to the news since Friday, keeping track
of the progress of Harvey. The storm is presently off the coast, picking up
some strength before making a third landfall and continuing north. Heavy rains
are returning to Houston, and two reservoirs are in danger of overflowing.
News crews were able to get still photos and video out yesterday, and the
scenes are amazing. A middle-class neighbourhood where friends were living
when I was there is completely under water, and I'm certain that the apartment
complex where I lived is even worse as there was a fence between it and a
bayou. We had an occasional alligator snapping turtle get into the parking
lot. They can take off a finger with just one bite.
The entire Texas National Guard has been called up, and the Coast Guard
has half of its helicopters in the area doing rescue service. Lots and lots of
air boats. I wonder if any of our Navy's assault transports are nearby? Those
hovercraft could make quick work of the evacuations.
The storm will not pass over the Trinity River basin, but instead will
inundata Shreveport, Little Rock, Memphis, St. Louis, and Cairo, all of which
is slow-draining low country that drains into the Mississippi River. So New
Orleans will be seeing the Mississippi get pretty high.
This event is getting to look a lot like the aftermath of Katrina, and it
is not going to abate for a few days.
