I've owned two German cars and two French cars. The German ones were in now
way less expensive to maintain, more even, but the French ones were lets
just say underbuilt.

Indeed. To bad quality control was not one of their innovations.
A Jewish uncle of my wife swore never to buy a German car, but still said

They were great innovators with front wheel drive, aluminum block
engines, progressively collapsing bodies, etc.
