Shipping costs are a bit of a scam. I've seen evilBay sellers charge
excessive shipping costs for bike frames, wheels, and wheel rims. I've bought
whole bikes with lower shipping costs.
I once had a seller double the shipping cost after the suction was over.
I charged him with fraud.
Once, however, I did have a seller contact me saying that he needed more
funds to cover the cost of shipping. I thought about it and reluctantly
agreed. The cost was still reasonable and I wanted that item, a 1971
Motobecane Mirage in almost spotless condition. I'm glad I did, and I fitted
it our to catalogue specs with one slight variation: It has a very rare
Cyclo/Benelux 3-speed cottered crankset and a Cyclo/Benelux model 64 freewheel.
It's now sitting outside my front door in preparation for an early morning
ride.
The seller's name was beebopcosmonaut. Can't forget that one.
BTW: FedEx Ground is the least expensive shipper for bulky items.
