Gawd, I miss that lens… sold it in a fit of cleaning after moving to 4/3rds.

Ugh. The Chinese and East Indians have made the real-estate crazy there. The
AVERAGE detached house is well over a million, and condos are going for nearly
as much. Bidding wars are driving closing prices up 10% more over asking
prices. They slapped a 15% foreign ownership tax on, but the foreigners simply
moved on to drive up prices in Victoria. This disease has not spread to minor
islands yet, but it will after Victoria slaps a foreign owner tax on, Any Day
Now.
This won’t have a happy ending.

Yea, there’s even a Vermont-like movement for Vancouver Island (and minor
islands) to secede. They meet, start working on a constitution, start drinking
beer, then forget what they were meeting about. It is the bastion of socialism
in BC, though, like it or not.

“Did my time” in Ottawa for a “cool job” in the 80s. It’s not so bad if you can
bring yourself to get into the whole winter scene and national politics. Take
up cross-country skiing and ice skating. It is so cool to go skating on the
Rideau and see bureaucrats in three-piece suits and briefcases, skating to work
in the morning. The Gatineaus are lovely, and you’re never far from wilderness.
They close the parkway to cars on Sunday; only cyclists and runners allowed.
(Historical note: they put the capital there before the war of 1812, to hide it
from the Americans. Some general invaded Canada, and searched in vain for
months for the capital to capture, finally retreating when winter set in.)
PS: are my quote characters turning into question marks in the direct mail?
They do in the digest. Any way around that?
