Back in the 50s and 60s, I also loaded bulk film, but used a small,
bakelite loader. It allowed me to load short strips, for quick shoots,
as well as the usual lengths. My best buy was 35mm Kodachrome movie
film, which, for a while, Kodak processed and mounted for free, before
they realize what was going on.

Then there's 24 or 36 exposures on rolls of 35mm film.
Unless you load by touch in the darkroom. Then, you can get 39 or sometimes
even 40 to a roll!.
I used to buy bulk and load my own. Combined with dark loading, I could get 44
or so on a roll.
