Yeah, I've had mine since 1979 !  I've added a few new heads over the years
though only because they had nice features (in particular the 410 geared
head), never had any of the Manfrotto gear fail.

I don't have an answer for you, but I'll be getting a medium sized CF tripod
sometime this year. I'm still a bit ticked at my boss at the camera store,
who sold me a couple of Bogens (Manfrottos) 28 years ago and said that they
were lifetime tripods. That's the problem, they're lifetime tripods. I can't
replace what isn't broken.
