John, most likely this is having the Control Panel window set to "Category",
instead of "... Icon". "Icon view will show the "Device Manager".
Alternatively, you can simply type Device Manager into the "Search Windows" box
at the bottom left. In Device Manager, you can invoke a "Scan for hardware
changes", by right clicking on the top level device (your computer). Also
change the display in Device Manager to view "Devices by connection".
One other suggestion is to look at what the Disk Management panel shows. It is
possible for drives to be detected but not assigned a drive letter. It can also
be accessed by typing Disk Management into the Search Windows box.
