Gee Philippe,
I understand the issue but don't like the elimination of the choices. I like to use
Dr. Flash's lesson and use bounced flash with ambient fill while dragging the shutter
with cam on a 'pod. That has always worked very well keeping ambient about a stop down.
The WB is good with proper skin-tones and doesn't look too "flashy" and
provide some nice catchlights.
This is a case where digital hasn't managed to be as good as film. Back when I
was regularly shooting family gatherings, it would be OM-2n (or OM-4x) with
T-32. Try one direct and one bounced (or as many as needed to hope everyone has
their eyes open.)
And that's all; the OTF-TTL would take care of all the above.
Dr. Flash also taught me that distance is your friend with the square of
distance rule to achieve more even illumination and less WA distortion/size
differences. The flash becomes a point source though with harsher shadows but
the ambient fill usually takes care of it. I have even used two HUGE
flashbulbs which overwhelmed all ambient. The radio-triggers due not work well
with my FB brackets (caps might be old) and I had cords running around. All
guests were transiently blinded but NO problem with mixed lighting or WB
issues. (had to stop down so much Dr. Diffraction might have been irritated)
I think the guests enjoyed the novelty but perhaps no one as much as I did or
so Marnie claims. You could also shoot a target to ameliorate the WB issue
with mixed sources but why make it difficult?
Dr. No Flash might have a differing opinion.
Only on the details. You like it complex, and technically more correct,
perhaps. I like it simple. I'd put a nice flash with wide coverage enough on
the camera, set it mostly bounce, take some test shots with a volunteer for
amount of bounce and exposure before hand, and fire away until everyone looks
good, or they revolt, when the time comes.
The lighting situation is pretty impossible. I can make it look pretty decent,
at least for someone who doesn't know the room colors and the skin tones of the
people. But that's a couple of hours work by someone with pretty decent PS
skills.
Flash is the solution here.
