In The Netherlands quite recently it's forbidden to give a plastic bag for
free, they have to charge you €0.10, so many stores now give you paper bags
for free and/or you might bring with you a bag of your own choice.
I seem to remember that in England there quite a few exceptions for paying
for plastic bags.
I.e. when you buy fresh meat you don't have to be charged for the plastic
bag; there also some anomalies which I don't remember, but which have been
discussed in the BBC program Have I Got News For You #HIGNFY
Scanning and paying your shopping is possible in some of the bigger
supermarkets over here.
