It very much depends on where you live in this vast, un-homogeneous country. In many SF Bay Area cities, and some others
in NorCal, the plastic bags are completely illegal AND all stores, including little shops selling tiny thing that go
into tiny bags, are required by law to charge for each paper bag. Here, it's 10¢ a bag at the moment. Not a lot of
money, but the combination seems to be working, as few paper bags leave the markets. If that changes, the price will go up.
We all travel with a sea of reusable bags in back seat and/or trunk.
