Mind you, I haven't developed a roll of film (myself) in about 30 years.
But after reviewing both images I have to disagree as to the cause of
the dark strip in the back... and I say in the back because Moses's hair
is not the least bit affected in either image (at least at the
resolution you've shown us). If the development was uneven then I
believe his hair should show some sort of mottling as well since there
is a good deal of overlap of Moses's head with the shadowed area.
If the Fuji 690 had a vertically traveling focal plane shutter (which it
doesn't) I could believe some shutter bounce might in some way affect
the exposure on top or bottom but, again, Moses's hair is not affected
at all.
You may reject it but the most obvious answer to me is that that part of
the wall behind Moses's head is actually darker than the lower part.
While you're focusing your attention and the camera on the kids you
could easily fail to notice that the wall is a bit darker back there.
In any case it's an easy Photoshop fix.
Actually, I find the non-level, mortar seam running through their heads
as much of a distraction as anything. Were these mine I'd fix (remove)
the seam as well as the dark streak.

On the last day of my children’s visit here last week, I shot a roll
of medium format portraits of them. It sounds like a lot of pictures,
but given that I was shooting with the Texas Leica (Fuji 6x9 cm
rangefinder), it just means 8 images on a roll. I am quite pleased with
the results except for a weird processing flaw—look at the dark strip
across the top—it was not there in real life, and it appears on all 8
frames. I wonder if I did not agitate enough—I certainly put in the
quantity of developer indicated on the tank. In any event, I am happy to
have these images, flawed or not:
