The great thing about working in LR is that the original file is always

I have never understood why this is such a big thing. I work from
Raw files - there is no way I can save changes to a Raw file, no
software does that.
When I work on a file in PS, I save the results in a PSD file, and, as
you say, ". . . the original file is always there, untouched." I have
occasionally gone back and reworked files from years ago from scratch,
no big deal.
A supposed problem used to be the additional storage space for the
edited file. With the size of HDs increasing and price decreasing, that
ceased to be even a hint of a problem for me long ago.
Here is the file straight from the camera, just converted to jpeg

If that is all you did, you left out a step. Downsizing always makes an
image softer, so it should be (re)sharpened. I've written about why this
is so as have others, here, on the web and in books.
