A linear PL is pretty useful for darkening sky, improving the contrast
between sky and clouds, and for reducing reflected light from surfaces such as
water. Out here near Phoenix, atmospheric layering due to pollution can create
all sorts of problems.

Interestingly, a variable ND filter can be used as a double-ring polariser
in situations where both sky and water reflections need to be controlled.
