I thought quite a bit about your bellows and focusing rail comments,
especially about having spare bellows parts. But as to focusing rails
I'll probably stick with my little used ebay 2-axis setup. It doesn't
operate quite as smoothly as the Oly focusing rail but it's quite close
and not bad. Both have helical racks and drag adjustments. I found
that I couldn't tightly lock the ebay rig and thought that might be a
difference but then found I couldn't tightly lock the Oly rig either.
But I'm still thinking about the spare parts angle. You can typically
buy the complete bellows for less than the focusing rail but you do also
need a focusing stage for use as a rail alone. Something I do have but
not included with a bellows. Also something not needed with the ebay
2-axis rail assembly.
This is the device I'm talking about.

I was surprised to see the price of $29.95 + $6.80 shipping. I think I
paid about $50 for mine quite a few years ago. There are cheaper ones
available but at least some have straight cut racks and not helical.

I suppose the marketplace, perhaps even gestalt, of photography is
different now. But I also imagine that many others are like me, and
already have much of that gear. I bought the second rail (with attached
bellows spares) not because I didn't have one, but to make my
photographic life more convenient. I can just grab the one with bellow
or the one with focusing stage and get on with it. :-)
