Because of my experience with the Fuji 27mm AF lens, I reviewed the
forgotten features of the X-E1. I now have the distance scale displayed
in the finder, and can quickly switch from AF to Manual Focus. This
something that I had never tried previously, but it seems to work quite
well. Hence, the problem, like in most cases, was not with my equipment
but was "pilot error". Such is life. :-[

Autofocus can be a blessing when shooting sports, but not if one is
shooting through the fence. This friendly umpire chatted with my
family members several times between innings, and I attempted to snap
a photo. But, as I should have expected, the focus is on the fence
wire. And I am not proficient enough at shooting MF with an AF lens
to attempt a changeover on the fly.
