Rick, I searched on-line for the trick.
How to do it on the E-1 WITHOUT the computer:
Switch off the camera
Open the media cover on the camera.
Switch on the camera.
Ignore message saying cover is open
Press the Green arrow play button and the OK button simultaneously.
Firmware version will be displayed on the LCD screen

Well, I was noticing that the E-1 was rather sluggish and wouldn't
focus worth a hoot in florescent lighting, but didn't put two and two
together. The firmware is version 1.0. OK, time to update.
On my desktop computer, I've got Olympus Viewer 3, but it won't update
the camera. Suggestions?
