I went through this issue with the E-500/510. The E-500 does not
accommodate a cable release, but if you take the back of the body off you can
add the wire from the socket to the shutter release. I bought a used E-510
body, but the socket has a broken solder connection and I'll have to take the
back off to repair it some day.
I was surprised that a cable release could not be used with the E-500, and
I'm even more surprised that there isn't one for the E-1. I have become
comfortable with using the simple RM-2 IR shutter release.
Olympus was not consistent with the features from one model to the next.
For instance, the E-500 can record in RAW TIFF format, saving a full byte for
each colour of each pixel, which results in 24M files. And it will record RAW
monochrome in both OLY and TIFF formats. As far as I know, those recording
formats are not available in subsequent models, and it gives the relatively
lowly E-500 added value.
