 I think the point is emotional and tactile, not about logistics and efficiency. For some people, alternatives, such as 
you, I and others have suggested, may not "accomplish the same thing."
 I am not among that group, but do understand that for some people, physically handling the same object and using it for 
the same, collective project may create a feeling of belonging and participation that other methods of collective 
creation and display of images won't. Receiving and sending the camera, which I found annoying, likely made the whole 
thing more "real" for others.
 I participated before, in spite of reservations about the logistics for the "fun" of the group process. I'd have been 
just as happy shooting with my own OM-1. Unless there is some sort of ground swell for another physical Odyssey, I don't 
need one.
 
I think that the TOPE is a good and proven option.
