As someone who uses a lot of screws, I buy them by the 3-8k boxes, I
feel somewhat qualified to comment. Here is my list of _common_ head
styles listed from best to worst:
5*
-Robertson AKA square drive. A properly made Robertson is by far the
best. Don't be fooled by the many cheap knock-offs.
4 1/2*
-hex head or Allen head. Right up there.
3 1/2*
-torx. A good design unfortunately many of the screws commonly available
in hdwr stores in this pattern are junk.
-clutch
2 1/2*
-Reed & Prince
2*
-philips
-JIS
1 1/2*
-posidrive. unfortunately used extensively in euro cabinets etc. I give
it my "what the f@^% were they thinking" award.
no *'s
-slotted
-combo drives, assorted styles. all the bad, none of the good.
not rated:
-all of the specialty patterns
