Mine does, all the time - connect to a 2.5G network, on occasion voice only,
no data available. And I am pretty sure it would have done in 2001, but keep
in mind that I am talking about GSM on 900/1800 bands, not odd North
American standards (CDMA? NTSC?)!

I don't think a modern smartphone would connect to a pre-3G or EDGE
network. And if you happened to be in an area that was pre-data, I
would say no.
If someone who is smarter than I is about this would like to prove me
