Rick,
Try switching to a mixture of Safflower and Thistle seeds.
My experience with thistle seed has been different that what I've heard. American Goldfinches are supposed to love it,
and I wanted to attract them, so I got a special feeder and Black Niger Thistle seed. Nada, nada, nada.
So I gave up. Then one year, the goldfinches started showing up in considerable numbers, and have been around since.
More recently, the seed I buy added some thistle to the mix I buy. Nobody seems to like it, as it is left in much
greater proportion in the dregs when I go to refill the feeders than in the original mix. If one of the feeding ports
gets blocked/clogged, the birds will carefully eat everything else and leave thistle.
Even more recently, a friend who has had huge flocks of Goldfinches in the tree in front of her house for many years,
where she has several thistle feeders, has had them suddenly disappear.
