I'm over at the shop looking at Hurricane Alex on the UK MetOffice
Storm-Tracker page:
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/public/weather/storm-tracker/#?tab=map&stormId=01L&stormName=ALEX
this storm is actually going to intensify after passing northward over the
Azores. This is a bit baffling as it will be entering colder North Atlantic
water as well as passing beneath the jet stream, which should shear it down to
a tropical depression. Not this time.
An article on CNN resolves the discrepancy about January hurricanes:
http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/14/world/hurricane-alex-atlantic/index.html
It is the first NAMED storm to form in the Atlantic since 1978 and the
first HURRICANE to form in January since 1938.
And the reason that it will strengthen after passing over the Azores is
that while the sea temperature is just 68F the upper atmosphere temperature is
-76F, and the 144-degree difference gives storm enough energy to be a hurricane.
