For about a year in 1991/92 I carried the title "IBM multimedia data
standards planner". Hardly anyone knew what it meant (me included) but
my boss knew we needed one. What neither he nor I knew at the time is
that a year later I (and tens of thousands of other IBM'ers) would be
offered a lucrative early retirement deal. So much for that job.
