For this function, Focus Stacking, with the combining done in-camera, one has no control over that. Listening to the little tiny shutter noises, it's quite a few. I don't know if the camera is smart enough to use some sort of nearest and furthest focus to decide.

Taking the shots is quick, a moment or two. Combining them in-camera takes a 
few seconds.

For Focus Bracketing, where JPEGs are output for each focal position, to be combined later, there are three choices each for relative steps of focusing distance, Narrow/Normal/Wide and for number of shots, 10/20/30. This function on the E-M1 and E-M5 II works slightly differently and is far more flexible.
