That "orange box" is a FRED (flashing rear-end device) that transmits
information such as brake pipe pressure to the lead locomotive and can be used
to apply brakes from the rear end in an emergency. So, when you see one go by,
in your best Barney Rubble voice, say "see-ya, FRED!"
