As I recall, you carry a day pack with the non-photo gear things you need on the hike. My bag does double duty, carrying
gear from where I was to where I'm walking and taking pictures and carrying the other stuff while the cameras are out of
it and in use. Generally the only other photo gear in there is batteries and cards, occasionally another small lens.
My "hikes", walks in nature, on city streets, through museums, etc., are generally shorter than yours. I can carry the
water, snacks, and so on, that I need without the backpack. Wind/rain breaker is on or tied around my waist. Our walks
are different, so our solutions to traveling light are different , too. :-)
Photography is important for me but is ancillary to the journey. ...
