They do work for me. I'd pick #2.
Although the whistles are part of the story, in #1 they detract from too many
faces for my taste.
#3 is fine, and tells the specific story, but seems confused/busy as image. #2 is all clearly about one thing,
anticipation/excitement, and shows it so well.
