For portrait or any other photography where you're comparing very
similar images to find the best I've not found anything better than the
4-up comparison that you findn I Breeze Browser Pro (not free) or
FastStone Image Viewer (free). FastStone started life as a near clone
of BreezeBrowser Pro (viewer only) but then branched off to add some
basic editing functions. In a nutshell, FastStone is worth installing
and using even if the only thing you do is use the 4-up comparison
feature. You select 2-4 images and they're displayed side-by-side or
one above the other for a pair of images or in a 2x2 arrangement for 4.
You can magnify the images for closeup viewing and sync all four to
move move or magnify in unison if you like.
This feature is especially useful with mothers who can't bear to discard
a picture of their child or otherwise choose the best of many images.
Bring them up 4 at a time for direct comparison... choose the best one
of those 4 and only one and mark it. (marking function is provided) Then
do the next 4 and the next 4, etc. Then go back and do the same thing
with the winners of each 4-up competition. Choosing goes quickly.

Don't forget the (incomplete) user's guide. The author doesn't like to
write docs.
Shortcut instructions. Navigate to the folder in question. Select 4
photos. Click on the double pine trees icon inn the top icon bar.
You'll soon get the rest.

This
multipass method works very well for event, wedding and portrait
