Thanks, Ken. I put up a more optimized treatment of the Fuji Sunlight image, probably while you were typing. You may not have seen it. It comes out fine, but, as you and I would expect, it is not quite as warm as the E-1 image.

As has already been pointed out, the color balance is off a bit on
them for direct comparison, however, it does confirm something. While
Olympus did a fantastic job of getting the 510 to come close, it's
still not quite there. The Fuji is probably capable of getting a
little closer as it also uses the double red channel bump.

As an RGB array is unable to see purple, it only sees red, green and
blue. That's fine as most purples are actually made up of both blue
and red. But if it's a true violet color, there is no blue or red,
it's actually violet. The problem is that in the spectrum, it only
appears in the blue pixels. What Olympus and Fuji have done is have
the red pixels have a dual sensitivity, one up in the reds, and the
other down in violet. That way, both blue and red pixels get levels
and you'll end up with purple.

The big shift, in these flower pictures is in both UV and IR. The E-1
not only has a hyper-active (in comparison) near-UV sensitivity bump
in the red channel, but the red channel itself has an extended near-IR
response. I have found that when shooting weddings with the Olympus
E-1 that it is beneficial to have some flash in most pictures. Doesn't
take much, but you really need some. What this does is keep the color
of the flowers and some fabrics (especially purple silk) consistent
whether in sunlight or shadow. The shift is pretty dramatic with the
E-1. Where most cameras tend to just turn everything blue, regardless
of lighting, the E-1 will have pretty wild swings in color depending
on the light.

Another related aspect, which a matched color balance would probably
indicate, is that the E-1 maintains a slightly richer tone in the
shadows.
