What really does help is the road sign replacement/renewal programme up here.
As the signs are renewed, the replacements are bi-lingual. Hence on leaving
Inverness Airport the sign at the main road points to Inbhir Nis/ Inverness and
Obar Dheathain/ Aberdeen while on the road to Fort William/ An Gearasdan,
(think "garrison") there are signs to Obar Itheachan/ Abriachan. All help to
underline that "th" in the middle of the word is usually silent.
Look at the attached road sign from further west, you should be able to see the
pronunciation of most of the place names (and maybe even notice that
Invermoriston is an erroneous transcription, as the "d" is silent, per An
Gearasdan). OK, you need to know the meaning of Drochaid and Eilein - go on,
have a guess!
There are some words in Swedish whose pronunciation I find very odd - sju,
sjukehus and other words beginning sj, and spoken Danish was all but
unintelligible until Borgen came on TV, which is all the more strange, since
written Danish is a relative doddle (that is a sop to Nathan and Thomas
Heide-Clausen - where are you Thomas?).

Yes, we have that, Ian. But it doesn’t have Gaelic subtitles to help with
learning pronunciation.
I watch some Swedish and Danish programmes but the pronunciation is much
simpler to analyse.
