And there appears to be a resurgence in racial polarisation. We've had a
few here in Tempe that aren't widely known. A recent one was a white male
police officer got physical with a black female jaywalker. She sued, and the
cop resigned.
Years ago, we had a Hispanic cop (known as Chuckie) force a couple of
black men to do an impromptu rap performance as part of a traffic stop, which
he then uploaded onto a nationwide site for videos showing police happily
abusing suspects/victims. He and the city were both sued, he resigned, and was
then picked up by a federal law enforcement agency. I met him once, and my
impression was that he was better suited for drug enforcement.
Years earlier, a group of cops got rough with a group of young adults
having a water balloon fight in a neighbourhood park, claiming that the
residents had been complaining. Local newspeople later proved that there were
no complaints. The young adults were all members of a local Cop Watch program,
and when the abuse began they brought out all manner of video recorders.
